The history of Black History Month begins in the US in September
1915. Historian Carter Woodson and Minister Jesse Moorland
founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History
(ASNLH). The group sponsored a national Negro History week in
1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the
birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. By 1969,
thanks in part to the civil rights movement and a growing
awareness of Black identity, Negro History Week evolved into Black
History Month.
In the United Kingdom, Black History Month was first celebrated in
October 1987 in London. It was organized by Ghanaian analyst
Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, who served as a coordinator of special
projects for the Greater London Council, and created a
collaboration to get it started.
